Mustang Boss 302

In 1969 the Classic Mustang was reaching the pinnacle of its horsepower and performance. But even as EPA and DOT was starting to put pressure on the automakers to reduce horsepower Ford reached in and pulled out the Boss 302 Mustang. They were feeling so much pressure at the time that it is widely believed that they underestimated the horsepower on the 69 Boss just to make it more accepted. The Mustang Boss 302 was a performance package only available in the sportsroof model. The Boss package came with a 290hp 302, 4 speed transmission and a ground pounding 3.50:1 rear axle. The steering was a quick ration 16 to 1, there was no automatic transmission offered or air conditioning. From the factory the engine was set up with a rev limiter to keep the car from going over 6150 rpm. Needless to say very few of the rev limiters stayed on the cars.

It was well known at the time that the engines would take much more than that. In fact it was almost unheard of at the time to have an engine that would turn that many RPM's. In addition the Mustang Boss 302 had heavy duty springs, shocks a staggered rear end, a larger front stabilizer bar and Power front disc brakes.

Aside from the performance upgrades the Mustang Boss 302 also has cosmetic differences. You only had 4 choices in paint colors Wimbledon White, Bright Yellow, Calypso Coral (orange), and Acapulco Blue. Semi Gloss Black paint on the hood and cowl, front spoiler, reverse C stripe on the side with the Boss 302 marking and Magnum 500 wheels. The standard tires were F60x15 and the front fenders were slightly flared to keep them from rubbing.
