Ford kicked off the muscle car phenomenon when they introduced the pony car Mustang in 1964. In the near half-century since, the Mustang has spanned five vehicle generations, and numerous highly coveted specialty models. Perhaps the most prestigious of these is the Cobra, a designation that Ford first added to the Mustang on the 1968 Shelby edition, carrying the name over from the Shelby Cobra, of which production had ended in 1967.

However, it would be a decade plus before Ford would establish a SVT division that would allow the team to realize this dream.
